Thoughts and Advice for Future Contestants

  • Start compiling your list for the following year in January.
  • Unfortunately, cancer just isn't the death sentence it once was.
  • People who have made it to 90-something did so for a good reason.
  • Just cuz someone's career is dead, doesn't mean they are.
  • Find out which diseases are life threatening, and which just make you look terrible.
  • It's tough to predict which junkie is gonna get a bad batch.
  • It's starting to appear that if you have enough money, you might beat AIDS.
  • Read the newspapers. They are ten times more useful for dead pools then the net.
  • Don't fall for the most-famous = most-likely-to-die fallacy. There are many pretty famous people who just can't wait to die.
  • Health care in the former Soviet Union is in shambles.
  • Don't think about who is at the top of the news today, think about who was at the top of the news 10, 20, etc years ago. They still count.
  • Keith Richards, Stephen Hawking and Charlie Sheen have made it this far.
  • It wouldn't have been impossible to foresee Rabin being assassinated.
  • People who are dying don't usually appear on Letterman. Expand your horizons.
