Dying in January were pro hockey player Doug Wickenheiser and very old author Sarah Delaney.

Some trivia on the 1999 Draft Picks:

Favorite TV Show - Hogan's Heroes (3) - and no one chose Richard Dawson!
Favorite Sport - Baseball (7)
Most Murders - The death last year of Pol Pot throws this category
wide open. A tossup between Botha and Pinochet.
Surprise Nonpicks - Liza Minelli, Darryl Strawberry
Best List Combo - Cason's Scott Weiland and Van Cliburn
DP News for January:

Notably absent from big DePaul hoops reunion: Ray Meyer. The official story was that Ray was miffed at the U for axing his son Joey for fielding absolutely sucky teams, but perhaps AlR is onto something more sinister.

The pope didn't let DP naysayers dissuade him from travelling and visited America this month. Those who thought he looked a little slow shoulda seen MattS after his hernia operation this month. I make JP2 a 7:5 fave in the 100-meter shuffle.

Jan 23rd - CHICAGO (AP) -- Jay Pritzker, founder of the Hyatt hotel chain and one of the richest men in the nation, died Saturday at 76.

Sorry, JaneT, wrong hotel mogul.

Jan 23rd - NEW YORK (AP) -- Joe DiMaggio is in grave condition at his home, permanently bedridden and using a ventilator, the Daily News reported Sunday. The 84-year-old baseball great was released from the hospital Jan. 18 because there was nothing else the hospital could do for him, the newspaper said, quoting an unidentified source. When DiMaggio left the hospital, he reportedly walked out on his own. The Daily News, citing sources, said he was taken home on a stretcher. He is receiving nursing care 24 hours a day.

The reports of his recovery may have been premature.

Jan 26th - NPR reports that King Hussein of Jordan, less than one week after returning to Jordan declaring himself "cured of cancer", has rushed back to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota because he is "exhibiting" signs of cancer recurrence.

He's a goner.

Jan 27th - Evil Kneivel gets his liver transplant.
Jan 28th - Evil Kneivel's body is not rejecting his new liver and his recovery is moving along nicely. He expects to be riding a motorcycle within six weeks.

Sorry Cason.

Til next month,

The only pick dying in February was King Hussein of Jordan, snagged by the lowly Francois Mitterand Is He Dead Brain Trust.

However:

Feb 15, NEW YORK (AP) Former Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland pleaded guilty Tuesday to heroin possession and admitted he bought the drugs at a New York City housing project last July. A judge sentenced the 30-year-old Weiland to a conditional discharge, telling the singer he must stay out of trouble for one year, successfully complete a Los Angeles drug rehabilitation program and meet with a counselor four times a week.

The first batch out after rehab usually does 'em in. - JG

Feb 20, Gene Siskel dies and no one had him. This is an especially embarrasing gaff for AlanR and Brian who loaded up their lists with their co-Chicago homeys.

Feb 28, MOSCOW (AP) -- President Boris Yeltsin was in stable condition Sunday after bleeding of his ulcer was stopped, but he could remain in the hospital for up to a week, news reports said.

That's what they said about Andropov - JG

Feb 28, NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Evangelist Oral Roberts was hospitalized in stable condition Sunday after suffering a mild heart attack two weeks ago, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Roberts, 81, underwent an angioplasty procedure at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian to reopen a primary artery in his heart -- the same artery that caused heart problems six years ago, hospital spokeswoman Debra Legan said.

He needs $1 million or God is gonna give Ron+Liz their first stiff - JG

Apr 1 Update

Greetings DP enthusiasts!

The standings as of April 1st are:

First With Two

Jim Geary (59)
Mark Przybyszewski (84)

Third With One

Dennis Geary & Matthew George (63)

The big news in March was Mark "eyechart" Przybyszewski vaulting into first place with the deaths of Constitutional-freeform-associationist
Harry Blackmun and Mr. Coffee spokesperson Joe DiMaggio only to be caught by JG with the deaths of Dusty Springfield and Cal Ripken, Sr.

Nolan misses getting the flashiest death in history as country singer George "no show" Jones almost became no-mo Jones after wrapping his vehicle around a bridge support while talking on a cell phone. He entered the hospital near death, but leaves a little less near.
A great pick but tough break, Nolan.

In more bad news for Nolan, Wellington Mara appeared recently in Phoenix at an NFL owners conference and seemed in fine form. Next DP pick scheduled for an upcoming visit to Phoenix is MTM as a speaker at some motivationalfest.
"Oh Robbbb!"

Also visiting Phoenix was Dennis and MattG's third round pick Julia Child, who appeared as part of the "culinary concert at the Orpheum theatre." Dennis cheerfully reports that Julia had to scurry home early due to illness. She is now under doctor's orders not to travel for several weeks.

JG's first pick, Johnny Paycheck, near death Jan 1 with emphysema, is apparently doing much better and set to start working on an album soon. Prick.

MattS who has a special niche in the rules in his honor for picking Joe Torre's brother, Frank, a couple of years ago failed to have the foresight to go with the only eligible Torre who is now being treated for prostate cancer, DP friend to such un-old notables as Bill Bixby and Frank Zappa. Is it just me or is their an abundance of cancer incidents in baseball players recently?

Rapper Freaky Tah (aka Raymond Rogers) of the Lost Boyz was shot in the head as he was leaving a hotel in New York early Sunday Mar 28th. He was 28. He aint HeavyD, he's my brother, eh Matt?

In more news for the glimmer twin brain trust, Johnny Carson had a heart attack the week of the 17th and secretly underwent a quadruple-bypass surgery. He is rumoured to be recovering fine.

Not all the news can be happy snippets about people dying. I also have to report that in March, Chris Browner became a father for the second time with the arrival of Rachel Ann Browner.
Congratulations!

And in even more exciting news, my wife Jane, currently tied for last, took 4th place in the Insight.com March Madness pool out of 34,000 people. Unfortunately those pricks only gave out three prizes. Still, I need to hurry up and win this DeadPool to reestablish some sort of cockiness hierarchy at the Geary homestead. It took another 8 months, but I did.

Lastly: From Yasser Seirawan's Inside Chess publication:
"Like all chess players, I am often asked, 'What ever happened to Bobby Fischer?'
Well, we now have what appears to be a sad and definitive answer. Bobby's life is drawing to an ugly conclusion and it seems that the greatest chess player we have ever seen has become an increasingly bitter, hate-filled recluse."
Finally, an uptick for Nolan.

May 1 Update

May 1 update coming a little early as JG goes bicoastal for the week (Vegas _and_ California).

April was a bang up month with the deaths of
Boxcar Willie, Anthony Newley, Ellen Corby, Senor Wences and Buddy Rogers, all in a 9-day stretch! Never before has so much mediocrity left us so abruptly. Two of the corpses belonged to Tom, who looked to be imitating his spring fling of 98 where he lapped the pool with eight months to go. Time will tell.

News Department:

Apr 10th NEW YORK (AP) -- Helen Aberson Mayer, who wrote the children's story that inspired the 1941 Walt Disney cartoon "Dumbo" died at age 91.

Sorry, Maureen, wrong children's author.

Apr 10th LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A week ago, Evel Knievel was in a posh Strip resort, talking about his liver transplant giving him a new lease on life. Today he was back in the hospital, talking about the liver possibly being rejected and what fate might have in store for him...

Hope springs eternal for Cason.

Apr 21st -- Cop cars swarmed former Meat Puppet, and current JG pick, Cris Kirkwood's home on Wednesday night to cart out a body. Much to the surprise of all local onlookers, it wasn't Cris but his best from high-school who had OD'd. Still, not a good sign.

In the it's-always-something department, Mr Kirkwood and his dead best friend both graduated from the prestigious Brophy College Preparatory in the late 70s. This institution's 1983 chess team currently holds #'s 1,2,3 and 6 (that is, the ENTIRE SET of former champions) on the all-time JG Dead Pool standings. In the interests of full disclosure however, it must be noted that BCP also spawned the Francois Mitterand brain trust, so don't start putting your sons on the waiting list just yet.

In the Art Imitates Life Imitating Art Dept:

Hope you all caught the NBC movie of the week, "Having Our Say," based on the book of the same title by none other than the Delaney sisters, who were mostly known for their presence on dead pool lists around the net before their apres-timely demises. Now get this: who was starring as Sarah Delaney? None other than JG pick, Dihann Carroll, who apparently has gotten over the terminal breast cancer I had heard so much about last year.

Correspondence Department:

We at JG Dead Pool headquarters love to get your feedback. Your thoughtful letters help build a better dead pool for all of us. For example:
	Date: 16 Apr 1999 17:09:39 -0700
	From: Dennis Geary
	To: "jaygee%primenet.com"
Subject: Re: 'Waltons' actress Ellen Corby dies

I can't help but recall that you, during the draft,
lambasted Tom, as "a former champion", picking such lameness.

Also, from the Julia Child watchers group....
Our favorite drunken chef had to cancel her attendance
at this week's culinary festival in Scottsdale. She
was to put on a cooking exhibition. I'm sure that
those who didn't pick her in this year's death pool
	were terribly disappointed.
Thanks for your note. Due to the large volume of correspondence we get here, it is impossible to reply personally to every letter received. But for you we just might make an exception:
	Date: 16 Apr 1999 17:21:13 -0700
	From: Jim Geary
	To: Dennis Geary
Subject: Re: 'Waltons' actress Ellen Corby dies

Look Maynard, the day I pick three dead people out of fifteen
is the day you can start butchering sentences about me with
misplaced, during your letters, participle phrases. Did you
check the standings recently, did ya? Looks like someone
is on their way to being a two-time champion after only three
years. How many times has Greg Norman won the Master's? Zero.
How many times did John McEnroe win the French? Zero.
How many #1 hits did CCR have? Well, I think you see where
I'm going with this. Suffice it to say that I may well be
the smartest man of all time, and you better remember
that next time you put mouthstick to keyboard, bub. And as
for that swacked bitch Julia Child, that's the best lead you got?
Missed a cooking exhibition. Ooh, I'm quaking now. I'll tell
you what we're disappointed about; we're disappointed you
only wasted a third-round pick on her and not your first.
Still, we'll give you credit; she's better than your 3rd
rounder last year, one Francois Mitterand. The Cards finally
pulled their heads out of their butts on draft day, maybe
'99 will be your year too. Yours in a giant popping sound,

	JG
Thanks everyone, and keep those cards and letters coming!

Maureen has a good month, moving into a tie for first with
the deaths of actor, Dirk Bogard, and golfer, Gene Sarazen,
within a week. Near death, Sarazen was still seen on the
driving range his last days. When asked why, he offered,
"chicks dig the long ball."

May news:

May 7, NEW YORK (AP) -- Leon Hess, the oil tycoon and paternalistic
owner of the New York Jets who longed to see his team return to
the Super Bowl one last time, died Friday. He was 85. Right concept,
Nolan; wrong Eastern seaboard franchise.

No sympathy from JG who lost his AFC championship bet up 19.5 points
at halftime.(It should've been even more.) BillP, you're next.

May 9th. 34-yo Dana Plato dies of a drug overdose. No one picked
her, despite the fact that her Different Stroke's co-stars have
previously graced the lineups page -- Gary Coleman in '97 and
Todd Bridges in '98.

May 13th. Brian took time out from his busy trading in the
Exxon pit to giddily call me "I'm on the board! I'm on the
board!" Oops, bad news, Brian, Gene Sarazen was Maureen's pick.

May 21st PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Czech President Vaclav
Havel remained in the hospital with chronic bronchitis on Friday
as doctors feared he might suffer another bout with pneumonia.

May 22nd Noel Gallagher said today in an interview that his
brother Liam's drinking had gotten so bad that he was ready
to kick him out of the band(Oasis). Fortunately, he has been
clean and sober for over 3 months now and the band is working
on a new album. Sorry Cason.

May 31st Havel out of the hospital; Fahd in. A wash for Baker.

See you all next month!

Jul 1 Update

Christina busts out in June with the deaths of

In the news for June:

Peace is declared in Kosovo, thereby extending the life expectancy
of Tobin's ace pick, Slobodon Milosevic. I don't really think they
gave war enough of a chance.

Walter Matthau is alternatively rumoured fine and dandy/on death's
door these days after checking into a hospital for pneumonia. That's
the FMBT failing to close on their second hospital visit this year
(JohnnyC being the other). They're probably watching too many
Diamondbacks games.

Carole's pick of Hedy Lamarr graced the SanFranciscoExaminer
web page recently. An excerpt:

Per her biographer,

"She looks great. She's in great shape. She didn't get
fat. She lives in Florida because she loves the
climate, and she goes swimming every day. When
she's in public, people turn around to look at her.
They might not know who she is, but from the way
she carries herself they know she's somebody."

Complete story can be found at:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1999/05/09/PK57633.DTL

Sounds like she's doing pretty well.

June 22nd.
MALIBU, California (AP) -- Actor Robert Downey Jr. was handcuffed and
led off to jail for at least six weeks Tuesday after acknowledging
-- again -- that he's still doing drugs. "I am going to recover,
but I'm still finding that difficult," the 34-year-old Downey
told Superior Court Judge Lawrence J. Mira.

Surprisingly, the relationship with Farrah Fawcett didn't straighten
him out.

And finally,
because it's a slow month:
DPer Brian Cappelletto, current North American Scrabble Champion,
on why he picked Bill Clinton in the 15th round:
"Well, you know, he's offed a lot of people himself..."

August Update

Short report this month as, well, I didn't really prepare anything and it's August 2nd..

Christina pulls into the lead with the death of Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo.

Current Standings Are:

Also dying were King Hassan of Morocco and unpicked moron pilots who don't file a flight plan, fly in adverse weather despite not being rated IFR, fly with a cast on their leg, well I could go on, but I guess it proves you need more than great hair to make it to old age...

Sorry Ron, Liz and Nolan, wrong K.

Other news in July:

Anita Carter, sister-in-law of Johnny Cash died in July. Wrong country singer Jane and Nolan.

Mike Baker writes: "A hopeful sign for me and for Brian/Myna - neither Assad nor Yeltsin made it to King Hassan's funeral. Fascinating what a funeral can tell you about other people's health..."

September Update

Good morning DP'ers.

First a big welcome-aboard to new list members Jeff Blilie and Dave Shirley who have expressed unchecked enthusiasm for participating next year. Jeff should be a welcome addition as his starting QB's in our Fantasy Football league are Trent Green and Bubby Brister. Right concept, Jeff! Wrong league. You should do much better here where you are actually REWARDED when your picks drop completely out of sight. Dave brings a thorough knowledge of Snow, Beer, Golf, Triumph and Maple Syrup to our ranks, so he should be a force to be reckoned with as well.

Current Standings Are:

Christina O' Sullivan 4 (73)

Maureen Delgado 3 (78)

The only predicted death to come to fruition in August was Al's selection of baseball great Pee Wee Reese. This vaulted Al all the way from a tie for twelfth into sole possession of twelfth.

In other news in August:

August 4, 1999

Comedian Jerry Lewis, 73, has fallen ill in Australia. He has been diagnosed with viral meningitis. Deadpool watchers who like to see their game played out in real time may want to watch this years LaborDay telethon.

Aug 10, 1999

Jennifer Paterson, who has died aged 71, was a fat, loud, outspoken, laughing cook much loved in British society despite her eccentricities, but known to the world only in her last years as one of the Two Fat Ladies in the television series.

quoth dennis: "Looks like we picked the wrong old, fat, female television chef"

August 14, 1999

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Less than a month after suffering a stroke, former Indonesian President Suharto was readmitted to a hospital in Jakarta on Saturday for treatment of intestinal bleeding.

August 21, 1999

Mike Baker's heart jumped a little when he heard Faisal bin Fahd had died. Unfortunately for Mike, it was King Fahd's eldest son who was only in his 50s and not the ailing King.

August 30, 1999

Former NFL coach Fritz Shurmur died today, wiping out yet another putative JG #1 pick. Let's see, that's Brian Keith, Dan Quisenberry, Flip Wilson, Kim Perrot, Fritz Shurmur and counting. Can anyone make it to January 1st? (except, of course, Johnny Paycheck...)

Plans are firming up for the JGDPNYE2K Party. Have you checked out prices around for New Year's Eve? The Mirage wants >$2000/night. Even local dives like the Hyatt Regency want $500 or more. Stick it to those corporate butt-mongers and attend the Geary New Year's Eve party in breathtaking Glendale, Arizona. (Our motto: All our beer is Y2K compliant.) Admission is free (EF for the DP is still a low, low $20.) All the drinks are free. Champagne is free. Those gay little hats are free. JG has expanded the Dead Pool DJ collection, and may actually figure out how to work the 110-disc changer this time. For those of you with families, we've already lined up a baby-sitter!! She was the last one, so good luck making other plans. If there's any other amenity you could possibly think of, you can't think of it, because we already thought of it! Look forward to seeing all your smiling faces Dec 31st. For you out-of-towners, accommodations can be arranged. The free ones are booking up fast. We already have tentative commitments from 2 entrants from Cali to attend. For those of you who live in say Chicago, Portland, etc, did I mention there was a golf outing followed by a swimsuit competition last Dec 31st? Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun! Don't hesitate! Book your reservation today!

Til next month's pitch,

DP News for September:

9/6
JG Pick Leshon Johnson made the roster for the New York Giants after beating cancer in the last year. Doctors had removed a "grapefruit-sized tumour from his chest" last year. Oops. For those monitoring the youngest stiff award, this news makes MattS's Doug Wickenheiser a veritable lock.

9/16
JaneT's pick, legendary TV Game Show host Bob Barker, collapsed today in Washington DC while meeting with Congressmen concerning animal rights issues. He is currently undergoing routine tests at a local DC-area hospital and is said to be doing well, but is being kept mostly for observation.

9/19
LeShon Johnson update: LeShon Johnson had 18 yards and one TD in limited action today. That's more points than my QB Mirer got yesterday. You know you're running bad when your dead pool picks are outscoring your fantasy football picks.

9/20
Former Soviet Union first lady Raisa Rodham Gorbachev died today, outlived by her husband, 11th rounder Mikhail, and several other former first ladies on various lineup cards.

9/28
Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Rodham Ginsburg left the hospital today after being successfully treated for colon cancer. Ain't that the shits.

Oct 20:
MINNEAPOLIS -- Calvin Griffith, the baseball owner who moved the Washington Senators to Minnesota, died Wednesday in Melbourne, Fla. He was 87. He'll be missed by racists everywhere. Save a seat for de la Beckwith, willya?

Yet another wrong sports mogul.

Oct 21:
Entertainment Tonight reports that Johnny Cash has been in the hospital for the last week fighting pneumonia. The 67-yo singer was reported not to be in any mortal danger though.

November was a big month with the leaderboard bouncing all over the place. One week saw the reported deaths of: Mabel King, Donald Mills, Paul Bowles, Madam Gaby Casadesus, and Quentin Crisp.

Thanks to Christina for minding the store while I was in Australia. For those interested, who have yet to see it, the story of my trip can be found at:

(warning: don't print it out)

As it stands now, Matt Savoca is in first place for the youngest stiff award, and Carole Miller is currently sitting on the free entry for the last stiff.

Congratulations to noted live person picker, Jane Taylor, who last night became the first paid participant in DP2K. (And just to clarify, Jane, your dog's spiritualist is not a celebrity, tho I do sympathize).

DeadPool News for Nov 99:

Nov 5 BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) -- Malcolm Marshall, one of the finest fast bowlers in cricket history, died Thursday from colon cancer at 41. Sorry Chris, wrong cricketeer.

Nov 11 AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady, was hospitalized on Thursday after fainting at home, a spokeswoman said.

Nov 19 - Dudley Moore was seen on Entertainment Tonight positively drooling on himself. Not sure if this is fatal tho. He has started some research charity to help cure his disease. Save a drunken dwarf.

Nov 19 - Coincidentally, Jerry Lewis was on American Movie Channel at the exact same time in the Nutty Professor. Ten minutes of this and I was ready to call Dr. Kervorkian myself.

Nov 21 - LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Winnie Palmer, the wife of golfer Arnold Palmer, died Saturday after a lengthy illness, KDKA-TV reported. She was 65. D'oh! Not a celebrity, but that was still the wrong Palmer.

Nov 26 - Mickey Rooney has been hospitalized in Australia.

Nov 29 - Boris Yeltsin was rushed to the hospital Monday with suspected pneumonia, just days after he fell ill with what doctors had described as bronchitis, the Kremlin said.

Nov 30 - And finally a ray of hope for disgruntled, discouraged and disenfranchised participant Cason, whom we all love very much and would really like to see hang in there next year:

El Periodico de Barcelona - The singer of the British band Oasis, Liam Gallagher, is officially missing, since it has been more than 48 hours since the last time somebody was in touch with him. Not even his wife, the actress Patsy Kensit knows where or how he is.
