Even though this example was fictional, have there been any tournament situations where a player has gained an advantage by being able to keep track of close competitors' activity on an adjacent board?
Well as a matterafact...
In Reno, January 95 or 96 maybe, on boards 1 and 2 sat (I'm guessing here --I was on board 3 -- one of the protagonists may correct me) Wiegand, Widergren, Lester and Greg Heidler. One of the first 3 plays TABOURIN, and Greg with a rack of ABINORU and unsure of AIRBOUND, plays it scant minutes after. The punchline is of course it is not in OSPD. (Tho I bet JimM can guess where it is good. :) ) So the same phony stayed on boards 1 and 2, the latter after having it "certified" by the former.
